Gospel-Motivated Stewardship
Gospel-Motivated: In Response to the Father’s Gracious Love
At Christ Covenant, we begin with the premise that God has first loved us without regard to our performance or ability. “While we were still sinners. . . .(Romans 5:8) says Paul. When our heart and mind is captivated by this Gospel of Grace, then every aspect of our life is lived in response to that truth. Stewardship is a thankful response to our experience and conviction of God’s unearned love secured by Jesus on the cross.
This means that the Father does not love us more or less, or somehow bless us more or less depending on our acts of stewardship. The Father has loved us deeply and freely. How can we not respond in some way to such love?
This means that fear of the disapproval of our Father or other people has no place in our acts of stewardship, because “perfect love casts out all fear.” (I John 4:18)
This means that giving that is motivated by anything other than a free response to the Father’s unearned love, no matter how large, generous or sacrificial the giving may be, is something other than Gospel-Motivated Stewardship.
Stewardship: Reflecting the Values of Our King
The term stewardship refers to the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.
At Christ Covenant, we believe that each person has been entrusted with a variety of assets: “time, treasure and talents.” These are to be put to use and multiplied. (Luke 19:11-26) rather than guarded and preserved. While stewardship certainly encompasses how we handle our finances, it is far more than just that. Stewardship is a matter of how we invest every aspect of our lives
Our investment of these gifts – financial and otherwise - should reflect the values and vision of the One who entrusted them to us. Since the Bible is the story of our Father reconciling the world to Himself at great cost, our stewardship should embody that same love for people that are far from God and commitment to reach them with the reconciling love of Jesus.
Because our Father is holiness and truth, Christ Covenant has a strong commitment to financial accountability and transparency.
